Kathryn Willis

Kathryn Willis is from the north west coast of her island home, Tasmania. She researches socioecological systems and currently works at the University of Tasmania and the Marine Debris Research Team at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Her current work explores how successful local government waste management policies, infrastructure and outreach programmes are at reducing pollution from entering the marine environment. She has a strong research publication record and is currently co-writing a book on success stories from the informal waste management sector. During her research, Kathy has been very active in engaging with the community. Internationally, she has facilitated and trained over 60 participants in marine debris research at Udayana University, Bali, Indonesia. Locally, Kathy has enjoyed presenting and hosting pollution management and pollution impact workshops for high school and primary school students, community members and STEM teachers. Looking ahead, Kathy plans to take her PhD research findings and develop a waste toolkit that local managers can utilise to improve the management of pollution in their own community.
