George Gathuru Mburu
Gathuru Mburu is currently working as a Team Leader Ngaatho Community Foundation (NCF) in Kenya.
He works with forest adjacent communities as well as other stakeholders on ecosystem management, where he supports their efforts in protecting and sustaining the health of those ecosystems and connecting this work to national and international efforts. Part of this work involves policy engagement from the local level to the national and international levels.
He is currently leading the implementation of an ecosystem-wide programme around Mt. Kenya, with the goal of restoring and protecting Mt. Kenya’s ecosystem, which is threatened by climate change. In doing this, he is working with forest adjacent communities, custodian governance institutions, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and other civil society actors.
The project further aims to work with County Governments to formulate supportive policies based on the conservation of culture and heritage.
Gathuru is also involved in regional and international processes, including being a Steering Committee Member at the Global Alliance on Rights of Nature – Africa Hub (Garn Africa) and Committee Member at the Centres of Distinction on Indigenous and Local Knowledge (COD-ILK).
