Story on GESA 2022: Gathering for the 2022 Global Environments Summer Academy

What is GESA?

GESA brings together participants from across the world, attracting researchers, practitioners, activists, academics, and artists. The Academy provides mentoring, support, guidance, tools-sharing and expertise for those working on the frontlines for ecological and social justice and planetary well-being. From 2011 to 2018, GESA has welcomed 118 emerging environmental and social changemakers from 58 countries.

For GESA 2022, we brought together 17 participants from 15 countries, comprising activists, scholars, artists, researchers and practitioners who impact academia, civil society, the private sector and government.

The seventh Global Environments Summer Academy (GESA 2022) will be a 5 month long programme, encompassing a 4 month online fellowship and an in-person Academy hosted by the University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute.

This year’s GESA is a five-month immersive fellowship for changemakers who are working to find durable solutions to complex social and environmental challenges. GESA brings together participants from across the world, attracting researchers, practitioners, activists, academics, and artists. The Academy provides mentoring, support, guidance, tools-sharing and expertise for those working on the frontlines for ecological and social justice and planetary well-being. We have opened applications for our Seventh GESA due to start in April 2022. Join us to achieve systemic change through collective action, tackling complexity with courage.

Please refer to the brochure below for full program details.

Since 2011, GESA has welcomed 118 emerging environmental and social changemakers from 58 countries. For GESA 2022, we will once again select 20-25 activists, scholars, artists, researchers and practitioners from around the world who impact academia, civil society, the private sector and government.

We invite applications from candidates in the arts and humanities, natural sciences and social sciences—as well as those working in advocacy, law, media or policy—who focus on the relationship between environment and society. Applicants should be fluent in English and have at least a master’s degree, although we make exceptions for individuals with undergraduate degrees who have significant experience in relevant fields.

Fees and Bursaries

The full fee to participate in GESA is £2500 per person. This covers accommodation, food, field trips, and all sessions in the online and in-person academy. Please note that participants will need to cover their travel expenses to and from the UK.

We operate a sliding fee scale, which means that if you are financially able to contribute more than the fee, you will help others with fewer means to access the event. GEN also offers support and guidance to crowdfund for fees and travel costs. Please contact us if you are interested in crowdfunding your fee. We have a limited number of bursaries that will be offered through an application process. We do not want fees to be a barrier, so please reach out to us if you need any support.

If you require financial assistance, please submit a bursary application by 11th March, 5 PM GMT.
